Affordable California community colleges?

Hey all, I'm from Cali and looking to start at community college. Would love if anyone could point me towards the most affordable community colleges in California? I'd really appreciate it!

Hello! In California, community college tuition rates are quite standardized across the state. As of 2024, the current enrollment fee statewide is $46 per unit for both in-state and out-of-state residents. So, for a full-time student taking 12 units per semester, that's about $552 per semester. Remember though, other costs like books and housing can vary.

However, there are a lot of financial aid options available! The California College Promise Grant (formerly known as the BOG Fee Waiver) waives enrollment fees for eligible California residents and is quite generous in terms of eligibility. Additionally, California has a Promise Program that provides two years of free tuition to first-time, full-time students. These options can make community college significantly more affordable if you qualify.

Before you make a decision, I would encourage you to look into the specific programs at each community college. The strength of their programs, partnerships with 4-year colleges for transfer, student resources, and campus culture, can have a massive effect on your experience. Look at RateMyProfessors, speak with current students, and if possible, try to visit the schools. Best of luck with your college journey!
