Which majors are most/least likely to study abroad?

Traveling and studying abroad is one of the experiences I've been looking forward to most in college. Are there certain majors that tend to study abroad more or less frequently? I'd love to know!

It's fantastic that you're interested in expanding your educational experience beyond campus life with study abroad! Generally, there are indeed variances between majors in terms of the frequency of studying abroad.

The majors that tend to have a higher rate of studying abroad are often those in the humanities, such as language studies or international relations. Students in these areas often find immersive international experiences extremely beneficial to their coursework and understanding of the subject matter. For example, if you're studying French language and culture, spending a semester in France can offer you real-world context and experience.

Outside the humanities, business majors often also look for study abroad experiences to enhance their global perspective and understanding of international markets.

On the contrary, students in more structured or sequential majors like engineering, nursing, or hard sciences may find it a bit more challenging to study abroad. This is mainly due to the tight sequencing of required coursework in such majors, as well as potential difficulties of finding equivalent courses abroad in specialized or technical disciplines.

However, it's important to note that many universities are recognizing these barriers and are organizing specialized study abroad options for STEM students, such as summer programs or research opportunities.

Whichever major you eventually choose doesn't have to limit your opportunities. It's all about early planning, consulting with your academic advisor, and making use of any available resources through your school's study abroad office. It's about building a plan that allows for this unique and broadening experience.
