What is the cost involved in submitting applications through the Common App?

Money is a bit tight at home so I need to budget for my college applications. I've heard different things about the Common App having a fee. Can someone tell me how much it normally costs to submit an application through Common App? Are there additional costs I should be aware of?

It's great that you're planning ahead for application expenses. The Common App itself is free to use, but most colleges on it charge their own application fees, which range typically from $30 to $75 per application. However, these fees can be higher for more selective schools, sometimes reaching above $90. If you're applying to multiple colleges, these fees can add up quickly.

You should also consider the cost of sending official test scores if the colleges you're applying to require them, though many schools allow you to self-report your scores on the application, and you'll only need to send official reports if you're admitted and choose to attend. Also don't forget to account for any potential CSS Profile fees if you're applying for financial aid, which is separate from the FAFSA and is required by some colleges to determine your eligibility for non-federal financial aid.

Keep in mind that fee waivers are available if you're eligible. You can get these through your high school counselor or directly on the Common App if you meet the criteria. If you'd like to know more about fee waivers, you can check out CollegeVine's blog: https://blog.collegevine.com/the-complete-guide-to-fee-waivers-in-the-college-application-process. Your guidance counselor is the person to turn to, though, if you're wondering whether or not you actually qualify.

I hope this helps with your planning, and I encourage you to reach out to your school counseling office for assistance with fee waivers and any other questions you may have during this process. Good luck!
