Military Veterans in College - What's your experience been like?

As a military veteran, I'm considering college and I'd love to hear from other veterans. What has your experience been like adapting to college life after the military? Do you feel your skills and experiences from the military have been helpful in your college journey?

It's fantastic that you're considering continuing your education. I can't speak from personal experience, but I've spoken to quite a few military veterans in college and heard a mix of experiences.

Many have said that one of the biggest adjustments is the age difference between themselves and traditional college students. Depending on your age and life experience, you may find that you relate more to the faculty and staff than your peers. However, don't let that discourage you, as there are usually a number of non-traditional students and others who have also had unique experiences.

Of course, transitioning from the highly structured environment of the military to the more open-ended and self-directed college academia can be a challenge. However, many veterans find that the skills they honed in the military, like discipline, resilience, leadership, and time management, transfer well to college life and are significantly beneficial in balancing studying, part-time work, and extracurriculars.

Additionally, almost every college campus has a veterans' office or support group where you can connect with others who have shared similar experiences. These resources can be invaluable for navigating the unique challenges veterans may face when adjusting to college life.

Lastly, keep in mind that many colleges recognize and value the unique perspectives and experiences that veterans bring to the table. Whether in class discussions or group projects, your background can provide an enriching dimension to the academic and social environment.

Best of luck on your college journey!
