What are military college degree programs?

Hey everyone! I've been thinking about options after high school and feel the military path could be a good fit for me. I heard about military college degree programs. Wanted to know what they are about and how they assist in aligning military service with educational opportunities?

Hello! Military college degree programs are indeed a unique way to combine your interest in serving the nation with a quality college education.

These programs generally take place at service academies, such as the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), the U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis), and the U.S. Air Force Academy. These academies provide a four-year undergraduate program, upon completion of which you'll receive a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant or ensign in the respective military service. Keep in mind that acceptance to these academies is very competitive and that attendees have a commitment to serve in the armed force after graduation.

There're also Senior Military Colleges, like Virginia Military Institute, Norwich University, Texas A&M, The Citadel, and others. These institutions, while providing a military-style regimen, also allow students the choice of pursuing a commission or joining the workforce after graduation.

Another option is the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) programs available at many traditional colleges. Students in ROTC take both regular college classes and military education courses, and after graduating, they become commissioned officers in the U.S. Military. In return for a paid college education and a guaranteed post-college career, cadets commit to serve in the Military after graduation.

Lastly, there are online and onsite degree programs available through AMU (American Military University) and UMGC (University of Maryland Global Campus), among others, that are designed specifically with military personnel in mind. These programs are particularly accommodating of the unique lifestyle and challenges that come with being an active-duty military member, offering flexibility in terms of scheduling, deployment accommodations, and credits for military training.

Make sure to research thoroughly about each program, their commitment, and how they align with your personal and professional goals. And it's always a good idea to reach out to a military recruiter or a school counselor to guide you through the process. Good luck!
