Dodging Cliché College Essay Topics

Just starting to plan out my essays for college apps and I'm totally lost. Are there some essay topics we're advised to avoid like they're super common or just frowned upon? Looking for any advice on this so I can make the right choices.

Certainly, you're right to consider the originality of your essay topics. It's not that common topics are always problematic - but they need to be approached in a unique, personal way to stand out from the throngs of similar essays.

Some of the most cliche topics include the "big sports win" or "major sports injury," the "challenging AP class," the "immigrant's journey," and the "experience of moving to a new school." Unless you've got a unique twist on these subjects, it might be best to steer clear.

Often, it's not just about what you write but how you write it. Even a seemingly common topic can become a fascinating read with the right treatment and personal touch. The more specific and focused you can be, the better. Instead of broadly discussing your experience as a high school athlete, for instance, you could narrow it down to a significant moment or incident that shaped your character.

Here's an example: rather than writing about how your team trained to win a championship, you might discuss how you developed a bond with teammates during early morning practice sessions.

The key is to find a topic that reflects who you are, your values, and what you've learned from your experiences. It's about making a personal connection with the admissions officer reading your essay, giving them a glimpse into your life, and compelling them to advocate for your application.

Remember, authenticity is key. Be yourself, be genuine, and your unique voice will shine through. Good luck with your essays!
