Which test do colleges prefer: SAT or ACT?

I realize both SAT and ACT scores are acceptable for most colleges, but is there a preference? Do most colleges prefer the sat or act? Is there a reason I should consider taking one over the other?

Great question! For the vast majority of colleges in the U.S., there is no preference between the SAT or ACT. Both tests are widely accepted, and admissions offices are equipped to evaluate scores from either test equitably. They recognize that the two exams measure similar skills and aptitudes, so students will not be at a disadvantage for submitting one over the other.

However, one test may be better suited to your personal strengths and testing style. While both tests assess your verbal and math skills, the structure and content of the tests differ in some ways.

For example, the SAT presents more of an emphasis on problem-solving skills and understanding context, whereas the ACT can be more straightforward but demands a faster pace. Furthermore, the ACT includes a Science Reasoning section, which is not present in the SAT. This isn't a test of specific science knowledge, but more so scientific thinking and interpretation of data and experiments. If this plays to your strengths, the ACT might be a better choice.

The best way to make a decision might be to take a practice test of both exams to see which one you feel more comfortable with. Look at how the questions are worded and the pacing of each section. Which one aligns more with your skills and test-taking strategy? You'll want to consider these factors and then choose to focus on studying for that test.

Remember, the goal is to showcase your skills and knowledge the best you can, so go with the test that will let you do that. Good luck with your test preparation!
