What Kind of Institution is the Virginia Military Institute?

Quick question - is the Virginia Military Institute considered a college or is it more of a military academy? Are the degrees offered there comparable to those I would get at other colleges?

Virginia Military Institute (VMI) can be thought of as a hybrid between a traditional college and a military academy. It is a four-year undergraduate institution that offers Bachelor's degrees in various fields of study similar to other colleges. The primary difference lies in VMI’s approach to education, which integrates rigorous academics with military-styled discipline and leadership development.

The disciplines offered at VMI span across STEM, humanities and social sciences. Majors that students can study include Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Engineering, Economics, Modern Languages and Cultures, Physics, and Psychology, among others.

The degrees you earn at VMI are comparable to those you'd receive at other accredited institutions. You'll be receiving a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree, depending upon your major. However, your learning experience at VMI will be uniquely shaped by the institution's commitment to fostering leadership, honor, and integrity.

It's also worth noting that upon graduation, students are not required to serve in the military. While military service is common among VMI graduates, it is not a requirement, giving students the flexibility to purse civilian careers as well. However, for those interested in commissioning, VMI offers fully funded programs in all branches of service including Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force.
