Becoming a Pathfinder in the Military

Recently, I've heard about this role in the military called 'Pathfinder' and got really intrigued, so I thought I'd ask you guys. Does anyone know what it takes to become a Pathfinder in the military? Do I need to attend a particular military college or is it a designation you earn with time in service?

The Pathfinder role is an elite position in the U.S. Army that requires extensive training and preparation. Pathfinders are essentially the advance forces in airborne operations, established to guide in friendly aircraft and secure drop zones. In short, they chart the path for others to follow.

To become a Pathfinder, an individual will first have to join the Army and complete Basic Combat Training (BCT). After BCT, they would proceed to their Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) training. Post-MOS training, soldiers may apply for admission to the Pathfinder School, which is a three-week course taught at Fort Benning, Georgia.

The application for the school does require that the candidate be in a rank of Private First Class (E-3) or above, and hold an MOS in the series of 11 (Infantry), 13 (Field Artillery), 19 (Armor), or 92 (Logistics). This is not an exhaustive list though, so consulting with a military advisor or recruiter would be beneficial.

Once accepted into the Pathfinder School, you have to undergo a rigorous three-week course developed to challenge you both physically and mentally. The course covers everything from air traffic control and rappelling from a helicopter, to learning about different types of aircraft.

It's important to note that this is not a position you can receive just by attending a particular military college, though attending a college like West Point can certainly provide the foundational military knowledge and leadership skills that would be beneficial in this role. Pathfinders are generally experienced soldiers who have demonstrated a particular aptitude for leadership and challenging field operations.

Success in the Pathfinder role requires a high level of physical fitness, sharp mental acuity, and a capacity for quick decision making under pressure. If you're considering this path, it would be a wise idea to talk to those who have experience in the military to gain a deeper understanding of what it might entail.
