Sleep Deprivation in Colleges

Hey all, I have a question. Health is really being emphasized in our school right now, especially sleep, so it's on my radar. Does anyone know which colleges have students getting the least sleep? I like my z's and don't want to lose too much sleep in college.

It can be quite difficult to pinpoint exact college names where students are getting the least sleep since sleep patterns can greatly depend on individual habits and lifestyles, choice of major, and involvement in extracurricular activities. However, research from Jawbone, a wearable tech company, gathered sleep data from tens of thousands of students at over 100 universities across the United States and it resulted in a variety of averages. Overall, though, college-age users of Jawbone's sleep tracker averaged about seven hours nightly, weeknights and weekends.

For instance, the United States Military Academy, Brigham Young University, and the United States Naval Academy were among those with the earliest bedtimes. Schools with fine arts, music, and design programs often had later bedtimes associated with them due to the nature of the coursework and need for creative time.

Therefore, whether you get enough sleep or not in college could be highly dependent on your individual discipline and schedule. There are steps you can take to help ensure you get enough rest. Setting a consistent sleep schedule, taking short naps during the day, creating a restful environment, and limiting electronics before bed can all contribute to better sleep.

It's worth noting that while some academic schedules or campus cultures may promote less sleep, you have the autonomy to prioritize it and establish healthy habits for yourself. While in college, it will be important for you to set boundaries and prioritize your health and wellbeing. Remember, it's not just about the quantity of sleep but also the quality.
