How rigorous are the most challenging colleges in the US?

Hey folks! I've always loved a good challenge, especially academically. I'm interested in applying to some of the most academically challenging colleges in the US. What should I expect in terms of course rigor and workload? I want to ensure I'm prepared for the challenges ahead!

In terms of academic rigor, top-tier colleges in the U.S. provide a demanding curriculum. Generally, students can expect to spend a significant amount of time on coursework with complex concepts, extensive reading, extensive writing, and a requirement to think analytically and critically at an advanced level.

First, the overall intensity differs between each student's chosen major and the courses they opt to take. For instance, STEM majors are often regarded as having a heavier workload due to the heavy amount of problem sets and labs. Humanities and social sciences may have lighter consistent weekly workloads, but tend to have intense bursts around paper and exam times.

Second, despite your major, expect many top colleges to have a broad-based core curriculum or General Education requirement. More likely than not, these take the form of compulsory courses in a range of subjects, from English and social sciences to natural sciences and mathematics.
