Whats the deal with the career points in college basketball?

Hey all, I'm super into college basketball and I'm wondering about the deal with career points. What's the average, and how is it determined? Will being a strong basketball player with high career points help my college applications if I’m planning to continue in college?

Career points in college basketball refer to the total number of points a player scores throughout the duration of their college basketball career. This is determined by adding up all the points a player scores in both seasons and tournament games across all years they play at a college.

There is quite a bit of variability when it comes to average career points. Factors such as how many minutes a player is allowed to play, their shooting ability, their role on the team (some players have more defensive than offensive roles), and the number of years they play in college all contribute to this final career point total.

In terms of helping your college applications, being a strong basketball player with high career points can certainly be impressive. What colleges will likely be interested in is not solely the number of points you've racked up, but your overall commitment, leadership qualities, strengths as a team player, and dedication to practicing and improving. These attributes, demonstrated through your achievement on the sports field, can indeed be impactful during the college admissions process.

For the majority of colleges, being a recruited athlete can greatly boost your admission chances. When a college coach wants you on their team and supports your application, you may get a significant admissions advantage. However, keep in mind that this usually applies more to Division I and II schools. At Division III schools, athletics doesn't generally influence admission decisions.

Also, remember scholarship opportunities may be available for talented athletes, which can additionally help with the financial aspect of your college journey. Just be sure that you're also meeting all of the academic requirements of the colleges you're aiming for, as being athletically accomplished won't make up for any academic deficiencies. Being a balanced student-athlete is key here!
