Computer Science with Less Maths?

I'm considering a Computer Science major but I'm not too keen on math. Are there any specific colleges that require less mathematics for their CS programs?

While the field of Computer Science inherently involves a degree of mathematical thinking, understanding that not all students relish multivariable calculus or advanced statistics, there are indeed some universities that have less math-heavy requirements for their CS programs. However, this does not mean that these programs lack rigor or relevance, they might simply put a bigger emphasis on the practical application and software development aspects of computer science.

For instance, Oregon State University's online post-baccalaureate Computer Science program comes to mind, which is designed for students who already hold a bachelor's degree in a different field. The curriculum does not have any math coursework and the primary focus is on practical software development skills.

On the other hand, California State University (CSU) system also leans less on higher-level mathematics for their CS programs compared to other schools. Their curriculums typically require some calculus and discrete mathematics, but the emphasis is placed more on understanding software and systems versus theoretical underpinnings.

Lastly, while Wesleyan University does require some math prerequisites for the computer science major, it's not as intensive as many other computer science programs. It requires only introductory Calculus (Calculus I) and Discrete Mathematics.

It's important to remember that math does play a role in developing important skills in logic and analytical thinking, which are key to success in Computer Science. Thus, while it might be tempting to avoid programs with heavy math requirements, encountering mathematics in your course will certainly not be a wasted effort. It's essential to find a balance that suits your career aspirations as well as your academic preferences.

Please do consider reaching out to the respective admissions departments of the colleges you're interested in, as they can provide you with the most up-to-date and accurate information about their program requirements.
