Do all colleges generally request letters of recommendation?

Hey, I'm getting my application stuff in order, and I feel like letters of recommendation might be my weak point. Do all colleges generally request these, or is it more on a college to college basis?

Not all colleges require letters of recommendation as part of the application process, it indeed varies from college to college. Some schools might mandate one or two, while others may not require any at all. Where recommendations are needed, they're usually requested from a teacher, typically one from a class relating to your intended field of study, or a school counselor.

For instance, many schools in the University of California (UC) system don't consider letters of recommendation for most applicants. There, letters are only requested for specific applicants as part of a supplementary review. Similarly, California State University (CSU) schools do not require letters of recommendation.

However, highly selective institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, or UT Austin will typically ask for two teacher recommendations and one from a counselor. Therefore, it's extremely important that you review the admissions requirements of each college you plan to apply to, as they can widely vary.

Even if a letter of recommendation isn't required, some schools will allow you to submit one if you believe it will enhance your application. It can be particularly helpful when it offers a different perspective on your character, skills, or leadership abilities. Note, however, that a poorly written or generic recommendation can potentially harm more than it helps. As such, be sure all letters you request are from those who know you well and can speak positively of your abilities.

Don't hesitate to start conversations with potential recommenders early in your application process to give them plenty of time to write a comprehensive and thoughtful letter. It can also be beneficial to provide them with key points you would like them to emphasize that align with the traits and skills the colleges or programs you're applying to value.
