What are some of the least popular college degrees?

Hey peeps, I've got a question. I'm a junior now and have started to think about my major in college. I know everyone talks about the popular degrees, but do any of you know which ones are the least popular? I don't want to follow the crowd and it'd be cool to see if one of those less common pathways could be right for me. Any ideas?

Hello, it's an intriguing mindset to venture off the beaten path when it comes to your major. However, just keep in mind that a major isn't popular or unpopular for arbitrary reasons. There are demographics to consider and the industry demand for specific skills can vary over time.

But in terms of less common degrees, some often sit in the purview of specific liberal arts subjects. For example, majors like Classical Studies, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and Near and Middle Eastern Studies often see fewer enrollees than the more popular fields. Some languages such as Russian, Germanic, and Scandinavian Studies are less popular as well. Other less-trodden paths exist in the realm of Philosophy and Religious Studies or even Agriculture and Natural Resources.

The key though is to align your major with your passion and future career goals. The underpopulated major in itself might not lead to instant job opportunities post-graduation, but could potentially pave a distinctive and rewarding career path in the long run because it's unique. For instance, someone majoring in Scandinavian Studies could end up in international relations or working for the embassy of a Scandinavian country.

Remember also that there's a practical side to your decision. Make sure that your major does have some level of job prospects and aligns with your career ambitions. It's worthwhile to research potential careers in these fields and see what graduates are doing. Try using the LinkedIn Alumni Tool or interviewing professionals in the field. Happy exploring!
