1. Understanding the Prompt: Start by carefully reading the essay prompt. Make sure you understand what the question is asking you to discuss. It's important to stay on topic and answer the question directly. Try to understand the underlying themes and topics they're trying to get at.

2. Brainstorming: This is a crucial step that often goes overlooked. Take the time to brainstorm different ideas for your essay. Consider any potential experiences or events in your life that you may want to use as the central focus of your essay.

3. Demonstrate Your Passion: The goal of these essays is not just to demonstrate your writing skills, but also to see how well you can articulate your passions, values, and goals. Whatever you write about, make sure it’s something that truly matters to you.

4. Avoiding Clichés: Avoid generic or cliche stories, such as overcoming adversity in a sports game or moving to a new place. Your essay should help you stand out, so try to choose a topic that's unique to you.

5. Revision: After writing your first draft, take time to revise and refine. Look carefully for any grammatical errors or awkward phrasing. It's often helpful to have someone else read your essay to provide a fresh perspective.

Writing essays for college and scholarship applications can seem daunting, but the time and effort you put into crafting your narrative will pay off in the end! Each essay is a snapshot of who you are as a student and person, and gives the selection committee a window into your world.
