Sleep is important! Which colleges are notorious for sleep deprivation?

Hey folks, I've heard some horror stories of college students getting practically zero sleep because of the workload. Does anyone have info on which colleges are notorious for students getting the least amount of sleep? I value my sleep, so this might be a dealbreaker for me!

The stress and workload of college can definitely impact sleep, and it's a great thought to consider this as part of the college selection process. There isn't a definitive list of colleges notorious for sleep deprivation, since sleep schedules can be influenced by a variety of factors: course load, major, extracurriculars, personal time management, and even the individual's stress levels. However, some schools are popularly known for rigorous academic settings that may correlate with sleep deprivation.

For example, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) tends to top many lists for challenging workload. The same goes for California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where the high course load and rigorous academic expectation can lead students to have less than ideal sleep schedules.

Ivy League schools like Harvard, Yale, and Columbia also have a reputation for their intense curriculum, which may inadvertently add to sleep deprivation. Stanford, also known for its high-intensity academics, has even run studies regarding student sleep patterns due to concerns about student wellness.

Most engineering, pre-med, and architectural programs are notorious for their workloads no matter which university they're at.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, schools like Penn State, Arizona State, and University of California, San Diego have been cited in various lists and studies as providing a more balanced workload, potentially allowing for proper sleep.

Remember, every student's experience can differ even within the same college, and these trends may not apply to everyone at these campuses. Institutions are increasingly aware of the importance of student wellbeing, and a lot of them offer resources and counseling to help manage stress and ensure a balanced college life. Effective time management can also play a huge role in ensuring enough sleep, no matter how rigorous a program you're in!
