Out of curiosity and to get a bite-size taste of what college might be like, could you guys share what college subject you liked least and why?
As someone who interacts with many students, I often hear about various experiences.
One course that comes up frequently is Organic Chemistry. It's notorious for being one of the more challenging courses for premedical students and science majors. Organic Chemistry is more conceptual and abstract than General Chemistry and requires a solid understanding of chemical structures, reactions, and mechanisms. Many students struggle with the vast amount of information they have to memorize, as well as the need to learn and master various new skills like spectroscopy and stereochemistry, which might require different study methods than what they're used to. Despite its reputation, many also find Organic Chemistry fascinating and foundational to understanding key biological processes.
Another frequently mentioned class is Economics. Specifically, some find Microeconomics to be tough because it's a blend of qualitative concepts and quantitative analysis. It delves into the behavior of individuals and firms in making decisions about the allocation of scarce resources, something not everyone finds immediately compelling. The use of mathematical models and graphs to depict economic theories add a layer of complexity that can be challenging for some students.
Lastly, Calculus tends to be a struggle for some students. Calculus can be a big leap from the math courses many students take in high school, as it involves a lot of abstract concepts like the notion of a limit and involves proofs. The challenging part often lies in visualizing and comprehending these abstract ideas.
Different students have different strengths and preferences, so a challenging or uninteresting course for one might be a favorite for another. It's a critical part of the college experience to take a range of courses and discover what truly motivates and excites you.
