Looking for a military college in Charleston, SC

I've lived in the Charleston area my whole life and would love to stay local while still receiving military training. Are there any reputable military colleges right here in Charleston, SC? Any advice on navigating the application process especially appreciated!

Absolutely! The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, is located in Charleston. This is a highly regarded institution that combines rigorous academics with the leadership and discipline of a military lifestyle. The college caters to both undergraduate and graduate students, offering a range of programs like criminal justice, civil engineering, and political science.

Navigating the application process for a military college like The Citadel isn't that much different from applying to a traditional college. You'll fill out an application (The Citadel uses both the Common App and its application), write an essay, provide transcripts, and possibly sit for an interview. However, given the institution's military nature, there are a few unique elements.

First, your physical fitness will be assessed. After acceptance, students must complete the Physical Fitness Assessment, which includes sit-ups, a timed two-mile run, and push-ups. Regular physical training is important, so you can consider starting a workout regimen if you haven’t already.

Secondly, medical fitness is important as well. The Citadel requires applicants to submit the results of a physical exam, which is done using the form prescribed by the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board. This is to ensure you're physically capable of participating in the physical activities required as a cadet.

Lastly, The Citadel places a great emphasis on character and leadership potential. Your recommendations and essay will need to reflect your capacities in these areas. The admissions committee is very interested in candidates who have shown leadership in their current high school or community involvements, so be sure to highlight these experiences in your application.

Keep in mind also, that while the Citadel retains a strongly military-focused environment, graduates are not required to serve in the military upon graduation, offering you a good level of choice in your post-college career. Best of luck with your applications!
