Military Credits and Online Colleges

Hey folks, after high school, I'm planning on joining the military. I was wondering if there are online colleges that accept military service as credits towards a degree? If any of you could give some advice, that'd be great!

Absolutely, many online colleges recognize and give credit for military experiences. These colleges follow the guide created by the American Council on Education (ACE) to evaluate military training and experiences and convert them into college credits.

The ACE military guides are comprehensive documents detailing how military training corresponds to academic credit. If your chosen online college follows this guide, you may be able to earn a significant amount of credit for your military training and experience. The ACE evaluations can help to significantly reduce your time to degree completion.

However, it's important to remember that the amount and type of credit you receive can vary widely from school to school. Therefore, it is critical to ask each prospective school about their policy regarding military training and experiences, and how it would translate to credits in your chosen degree program. It's valuable to ensure that these credits will contribute towards your specific degree or certification and not just be "elective" credits that don't advance your progress.

Just as an example, Western Governors University (WGU), Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) and Colorado State University Global Campus (CSU-Global) are known for being particularly friendly to military members and veterans, providing credit for military training, CLEP and DSST exams, and other prior learning assessments.

Lastly, the GI Bill provides substantial assistance to service members wishing to further their education, including online study. You could consider looking into how you could utilize such benefits.

Good luck with your military service and educational pursuits! Your proactive approach will certainly serve you well.
