Military grants for college in Texas

Hey y'all, I'm a Texan thinking about college and I heard about these military grants specifically for students in Texas. Does anyone have any insights into this?

Absolutely, there are indeed several military-based grants and scholarships available for residents of Texas.

First, there's the Hazlewood Act, which is a Texas-specific benefit that provides qualified veterans, spouses, and dependent children with education benefits including up to 150 hours of tuition exemption at public colleges or universities in Texas. This does not include living expenses, books, or supply fees.

Then, we have the Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program (TASSP). The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage students to become members of the Texas Army National Guard, the Texas State Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Merchant Marine, or to become commissioned officers in any branch of the armed services of the United States. Each year the governor and the lieutenant governor may each appoint two students, and each state senator and each state representative may appoint one student to receive an initial conditional scholarship.

The Military Family Scholarship, sponsored by Allied Van Lines, offers two $1,000 scholarships to Texas college-bound military dependents. Veterans United Foundation offers $2,000 scholarships to surviving spouses or children of fallen members of the armed forces.

Finally, keep in mind that you can also utilize federal military scholarships and grants like the Montgomery GI Bill, Post 9/11 GI Bill, and Reserve Education Assistance Program (REAP).

Remember to check the eligibility requirements and application deadlines for each of these resources to ensure you maximize the benefits you may qualify for. And don’t forget to fill out the FAFSA to see if you qualify for any federal need-based aid!
