Impact of military service on college experience?

I've been considering joining the military before attending college. Can anyone share their experiences of how being in the military influenced their time in college, if it did at all?

That's a great question! Joining the military before pursuing higher education can bring quite a few benefits and unique perspectives to your college experience.

Firstly, it often instills discipline, time management skills, and a strong work ethic which are invaluable to success in college. It also encourages you to approach situations with a problem-solving mindset. With this approach, you're more likely to tackle any challenges that college throws at you head-on.

Secondly, being a military veteran can give you a different perspective compared to your peers. This unique viewpoint can contribute to classroom discussions, group projects, and other collaborative activities in a meaningful way.

Financially, the GI Bill can cover a significant portion, if not all, of your tuition expenses. This is a significant advantage as it can reduce or eliminate the debt burden that many college-goers face.

There is also the sense of camaraderie you've developed in the military. This might help you form strong bonds with people in college. Many universities have veterans' groups, which could provide a community of people who've had similar experiences.

However, it's worth keeping in mind that transitioning from military to civilian life, let alone a college environment, can be challenging for some. There might be moments when you feel out of sync with your classmates because of the difference in experiences.

Every individual's military and subsequently college experience is unique. You might consider reaching out to veterans support groups at colleges you're considering, or virtual spaces where veterans congregate, to gain a more personalized perspective into this matter.
