Need Help Identifying Top Military-Friendly Colleges

Hello all, I'm beginning my college search and since I'm part of my high school's JROTC, I'm ideally looking for schools that are supportive of students with military aspirations. I've seen lists of 'Top Military-Friendly Schools' but I'd love to hear some personal experiences or recommendations too! Thanks in advance!

Hello! It's commendable that you're looking for colleges that support military aspirations. Your JROTC involvement will be a great asset as you narrow down your choices.

A key thing to remember is that military-friendly schools usually offer various resources like on-campus ROTC programs, military scholarships, and veteran support services, among other things. However, ensure these schools also align with your academic goals and offer strong programs in your field of interest.

A few schools renowned for their military-friendly environment include:

- The United States service academies (US Military Academy - West Point, Naval Academy - Annapolis, Air Force Academy - Colorado Springs, Coast Guard Academy - New London, Merchant Marine Academy - Kings Point), which have strong ties with the military and rigorous academic programs. Admission is competitive and involves a nomination, usually from a member of Congress. Tuition is typically paid by the government in exchange for years of service after graduation.

- Schools like Norwich University, Texas A&M University, and Virginia Tech have a longstanding tradition of military involvement and offer handfuls of resources for students with aspirations like yours. Norwich, in particular, is known as the birthplace of ROTC and places a strong emphasis on leadership and service.

- Private colleges like Georgetown University and Syracuse University also have strong military communities and support initiatives in place.

Please note though, not all colleges with ROTC programs would necessarily be listed as "military-friendly." Some schools may not advertise as such but may still offer substantial support and resources for students with military goals. Conversely, some schools marketed as "military-friendly" may not fully meet your expectations, so it's always best to dig a little deeper and learn more about the support they offer.

Remember to consider factors like class size, location, and the overall school culture as well. Reach out to admissions offices or military liaisons at the particular schools and ask about their support services, the military community on campus, and any programs or initiatives tailored to military-connected students. This will give you a more comprehensive picture and make your choice a bit easier. Best of luck with your applications!
