Hey guys, I’m a junior and a varsity volleyball player. I've been thinking about how to combine my sports and academic interests when applying to colleges and I came across HBCU Volleyball Showcases. Does anyone have any experience with these? How much do they help with getting noticed by HBCU coaches, and can they play a significant role in admissions if you're not being actively recruited?
Hello there! I understand the mix of excitement and uncertainty you might be feeling. Showcases, in general, can be a fantastic way to get on a coach's radar, especially at schools where you might not have been on their initial list of recruits.
They offer the opportunity for face-to-face interaction and allow you to display your skills and athleticism directly to attending coaches. It can definitely play a role in admissions, especially at schools that value having well-rounded student-athletes.
It's important, however, to also reach out to the coaches at the HBCUs you're interested in before attending the showcases. Send them an email with your highlights, academic interests, and let them know you'll be attending the showcase; this can encourage them to take a special interest in your performance.
After the showcase, a follow-up email expressing your continued interest and any new achievements can also keep the communication channel open. Wishing you the best of luck with your volleyball and college aspirations!
