Most College Football Championships?

Hello! Just out of curiosity, can someone tell me which college has won the most football championships? Any statistics or fun facts would be great!

The college with the most overall National Championships in football is the University of Alabama. As of 2024, Alabama has won 18 recognized National Championships. Their victories span many years, with their first win in 1925 and the most recent one in 2020.

A fun fact about Alabama's football program is that they've had a succession of very successful coaches. Their current period of dominance started under Nick Saban, who became the head coach in 2007 and led Alabama to six national championships before retiring in 2022.

One thing to note, however, is that determining the "most championships" can be a little complicated due to the nature of college football. Unlike in other sports, there wasn't a formal playoff system until 2014. Prior to that, the champion was usually determined by polls of sportswriters and coaches, and there were often multiple polls declaring different champions. So depending on how one counts, other schools such as Princeton or Yale, which dominated in the early years of college football, could also make claims regarding the most championships.

But in terms of recognized modern-era National Championships, the University of Alabama is at the top of the list.
