Applying to the US Merchant Marine Academy

Been considering the US Merchant Marine Academy, can anyone give me an idea of what the application process is like? I'm quite familiar with the regular college application process, but I'm wondering if it's a significantly different experience for military colleges?

As someone who's knowledgeable about college admissions, I can tell you that applying to a military academy like the US Merchant Marine Academy is indeed quite a bit different from applying to traditional colleges. The process involves a unique set of steps that you'll have to follow.

The application opens up on May 1st of the year prior to matriculation, and it is a rolling admissions process. First, it's important to remember that you'll need to obtain a nomination, often from your Congressional representative or one of your state's senators. Be sure to start this process early, as it can take some time. Each senator, representative, and the vice president can have only five people attending the Academy at any given time.

The Academy uses the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) as part of its application process. The CFA is a test of strength, agility, speed, and endurance and consists of six parts: basketball throw, pull-ups (men)/flexed-arm hang (women), shuttle run, sit-ups, push-ups, and a one-mile run. It is important to train for this assessment as your scores do matter.

Medical qualification is another necessary part of the process. You'll need to pass a medical exam which will be reviewed by the DoDMERB (Department of Defense Medical Exam Review Board). Some conditions, like color blindness, for instance, are disqualifying for this Academy.

Additionally, you'll need to fill out the online application, which includes biographical information, academic performance, ACT/SAT scores, extracurricular activities, and leadership roles. There will be a few essays you'll need to write on subjects such as why you're interested in the Academy and a statement of your aspirations and goals.

Keep in mind that the US Merchant Marine Academy is a highly rigorous institution that focuses heavily on leadership, physical fitness, and academics. They're looking for applicants who demonstrate qualities like dedication, resilience, and a strong commitment to service, so highlight these aspects in your application.

Lastly, show interest! Attend the Academy's summer program, known as "Admissions Visits" if you can, or virtual tours and webinars. You may also want to consider reaching out to current midshipmen or alumni to ask about their experiences. This can help you understand the expectations and realities of the Academy, as well as demonstrating your dedication to potentially being a part of it.

Hope this gives you a good starting point!
