How Selective is Military's College Payment?

Hi! I've heard that the military could potentially pay for higher education. However, are there any restrictions like they would only pay for specific colleges or courses? Or can I go to any college and study any course I want on their dime?

Each branch of the U.S. military offers its own education benefits, so the details vary. The most comprehensive program is the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which is available to servicemen and servicewomen across the military branches. Under this program, the military covers 36 months of education benefits, which could include tuition, housing, and books, among other things. This benefit can be used at any accredited college or university that participates in the U.S Department of Veteran Affairs program. This includes both public and private 2-year and 4-year institutions. There isn't a restriction on the type of degree program you can pursue either, so you could study a wide range of subjects.

It's important to note, however, that the amount of benefits you're eligible for under the Post-9/11 GI Bill depends on the length of your service. For example, if you serve for at least 36 months, you could potentially have 100% of your education costs covered, but if you've served less, then a smaller percentage of the costs will be covered.

Specific branches also have their own educational assistance programs. For example, the Army Tuition Assistance program pays for up to 16 semester hours per fiscal year, and the Navy and Marine Corps offer similar programs.
