Military Service for College Funds

Hey there, I've heard that years of military service can help fund college studies. Can anyone clarify this for me? How long should someone typically serve to obtain significant college funding?

Hello! You're on target. The U.S. military offers several programs that help service members finance their education. Here's a bit of detail on a couple of the most significant ones:

Firstly, the Charles Montgomery GI Bill, often referred to as the Post-9/11 GI Bill, offers up to 36 months of education benefits to service members who have been on active duty for 90 days or more since Sept. 11, 2001. Benefits can include up to 100% coverage of tuition and fees at a public in-state college, a monthly housing allowance, and a yearly books and supplies stipend. The length of service determines the percentage of these benefits that a service member is entitled to, ranging from 40% for those with at least 90 days but less than six months of active-duty service, to 100% for those with at least 36 months of service.

Secondly, the Tuition Assistance program can also pay up to 100% of tuition and fees for active duty, Reserve, and National Guard servicemembers, up to a maximum of $250 per semester credit hour or $4,500 per fiscal year. In many cases, this benefit can be used while you're still in service, potentially allowing you to earn a degree before transitioning into civilian life.

Keep in mind, though, that military service is a significant commitment and should not be viewed purely as a means to fund education. It's crucial to consider all aspects and implications, such as the physical and psychological demands, before making a decision.
