What is required by most colleges from an applicant?

Hello! I'm starting to look into applying for colleges next year and wondering about the key requirements most colleges have. Not just grades and tests, but maybe any specific courses or experiences? Seeking any insights you veteran college applicants might have.

Good question! While requirements can vary from college to college, there are some common components that most colleges look for in an application:

Academics: Good grades, a rigorous course load, and solid standardized test scores are often fundamental. Commonly, colleges require four years of English, three to four years of mathematics, three years of science, three years of social studies, and at least two years of a foreign language.

Testing: Many schools will require you to submit either SAT or ACT scores, though some universities are switching to test-optional due to the pandemic. Even so, having these scores can be beneficial to your application.

Extracurricular activities: Rather than a multitude of different activities, most colleges like to see a high level of involvement, commitment and leadership in a few areas of interest. Therefore, it's not just about quantity, but more about the depth and quality of your engagement.

Essays: Almost all colleges require a personal essay as part of their application process. These essays often provide a chance for students to express their character, personal growth, and unique experiences.

Letters of Recommendation: Most colleges require at least one, sometimes two, letters of recommendation. These can be from teachers, guidance counselors, coaches, or other adults who know you well and can vouch for your character and potential.

In addition, depending on what you want to study, there may be other requirements. For example, students applying to art or music programs often need to submit portfolios or audition tapes.

Remember to check each college's specific admissions requirements on their websites. While there are many common requirements, there can also be unique ones depending on the school. Hope this helps and best of luck with your college applications!
