Doing Online College Courses While on Active Duty. Thoughts?

I'm currently on active duty and considering doing some online college courses. Anyone have any experience with this? What should I expect, and do you guys think its feasible?

As someone experienced with the college admissions process, I can say that a number of active duty personnel successfully juggle online college courses with their military responsibilities. It is certainly feasible, but there are specific factors to consider for successfully balancing the two.

Time management will be critical. Online courses often allow for flexibility, meaning you can complete coursework around your duty schedule. However, you'll need to be disciplined to set aside dedicated time for studying and coursework.

Choose an accredited online institution that understands the needs of military students. Some colleges offer credit for military training and experiences, and might provide supplemental support such as online tutoring, academic advising, and military-friendly policies (e.g., leaves of absence for deployment).

Consider the impact of potential deployments or relocations on your ability to complete coursework. Some online programs may require occasional in-person sessions, so be sure you fully understand the requirements of your specific program.

Understand your financial options. Active duty personnel have access to tuition assistance programs, but each branch of service has its own procedures and requirements for obtaining these benefits. Be sure to research these thoroughly.

Lastly, don't forget to check that the courses or program aligns with your long-term educational or career goals. Do these courses provide transferrable credits if you plan on completing a degree later? Will they help advance your military career or a civilian career post-service?

In summary, pursuing online college courses while on active duty is possible, but it will require diligent planning and time management. Enlisting the support of advisors from both your military branch and prospective college can aid in a smoother journey.
