Thoughts on Going to College After Military?

Anyone around here who's been in the military and then went to college? What was your experience like? Advantages, disadvantages, or any advice?

Transitioning from the military to a college environment can have its own unique challenges, but it can also be a rewarding experience. Here are a few points to consider:

1. Military service often imbues individuals with strong discipline and leadership skills, which can contribute substantially to academic success. You'll likely notice that your background gives you a maturity and focus that can be a big advantage in navigating academic demands.

2. Communication and culture could be surprises. Universities often have a different "language" and social norms compared to the military, and it might take a bit of time to adjust.

3. Scope out resources for veterans. Many colleges and universities offer specific veteran support services, such as a Veterans' Affairs office or even a Veterans' Student Union. These can provide valuable resources and a built-in community of people who understand what you're going through.

4. Financially, you may have access to the GI Bill, which can cover a substantial portion of your tuition costs. This can make the prospect of affording college more manageable.

5. Socially, you might find that there's a bit of an age and experience gap between you and traditional college students. This can sometimes feel isolating, but there are usually other veterans or adult learners on campus you can connect with.

6. Classes might feel a bit strange initially, especially if you've spent several years out of an academic setting. However, your disciplined work ethic should help you adjust and succeed. Don't shy away from seeking academic support services if needed.

Overall, the transition can indeed be challenging but with the right resources and support, many veterans find academic environments to be a rewarding and fulfilling space where they can work towards new career goals and opportunities. My advice would be to do your research, reach out to all available resources on campus for veterans and don't hesitate to ask for support when needed.
