College or military: Which should I pursue first?

Hello there! I'm a high school junior and like many of you, I'm unsure about my next step after graduation. I'm currently juggling the idea of joining the military versus going to college first. What do you think? Is it beneficial to get a college diploma before enlisting, or should I just head straight into the military? Would love some advice!

Your question certainly illustrates a big decision, and keep in mind that it largely depends on your personal goals, interests, and circumstances. Joining the military or going to college are both commendable paths, but each has its unique features and benefits.

Most recruiters encourage high school graduates who are interested in the military to consider the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program in college. Essentially, the ROTC program allows you to go to school and serve in the military simultaneously. Upon graduation, you'll earn the status of an officer. The added advantage here is that the military often pays for your education in exchange for your commitment to serve.

Going to college first could provide various leadership, social, and academic experiences, which may positively shape you for your time in the military. Moreover, if you decide during college that the military isn't right for you, a degree gives you more options in the civilian world.

On the other hand, joining the military after high school could give you hands-on experience and training in various fields, as well as financial stability right out of high school. The military also offers benefits for college tuition for its members, so you could potentially attend college after serving.

In any case, you must reflect on your overall goals. Do you aim for a certain military career where a college degree would advance you? Are you eager to serve right after high school? Remember, no one route is superior to the other – it essentially depends on your ambitions and circumstances. Weigh the pros and cons of each carefully and consult with professionals in both fields to make an informed choice. Whatever you decide, there's a rewarding journey ahead!
