Help for Veterans in College

Hey all, I'm thinking about joining the military after high school as a path to college. If later down the road, say after serving, I decide to go to college, are there resources available to help veterans like myself transition back into academics and complete their degree?

Absolutely, there are numerous resources in place to support veterans who choose to pursue higher education after serving. One of the main resources is the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which provides financial support for education and housing to veterans with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 10, 2001, or to those discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days of service. This bill can help cover tuition and fees, provide a monthly housing allowance, and give an annual stipend of up to $1,000 for books and supplies depending on your time served.

Along with these financial aid opportunities, many universities have offices dedicated to supporting veteran students. These offices often offer various services, such as assistance with VA benefits, transition guidance, academic advising, career counseling, and opportunities for social engagement with other veterans. Some universities also provide college credit for military training and experiences.

Lastly, consider looking into external resources such as Student Veterans of America and the Veterans Education Resource Center, both of which provide resources to support veterans in higher education. They offer a variety of resources, including mentorship programs, academic support, access to internships and scholarships, job placement assistance, and networking opportunities.

Remember, everyone's experience transitioning from military service to higher education is unique. Use these resources and reach out to your desired schools to fully understand what support they can offer you. Don't hesitate to ask for help to ensure that you have all the tools you need for success.
