Military Benefits for College in Texas?

Hi everyone, I'm a Texas resident currently looking into joining the military after high school. Just wondering, what kind of benefits can I expect for college if I join? I've heard there might be grants and scholarships, but not sure. Any info would be very helpful!

Hello there! Good on you for considering serving your country and thinking ahead about your education.

Enlisting in the military can indeed provide several benefits when it comes to pursuing higher education. One of the most significant benefits provided by the federal government is the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which can cover full tuition for in-state students at public colleges or a set amount per year for private or out-of-state schools. Additionally, the bill also provides a housing allowance and a stipend for books and supplies.

In Texas, you'll also have access to the Hazlewood Act. Qualified veterans, and some children of active duty military members, can get up to 150 hours of tuition exemption, including many fee charges, at Texas public colleges or universities. It's important to note that this does not cover living expenses or books.

Moreover, many schools across the country provide additional resources, scholarships, and support services for veterans and military students. Therefore, it's a good idea to research the military benefits and resources offered by the specific universities you're interested in attending.

Talk to a recruiter or a college counselor to get a more detailed understanding of what you may be eligible for. They are equipped to navigate these systems and can provide you with the most accurate information.

Note that certain benefits may depend on factors like the length and nature of your service, whether you're on active duty or a reservist, and other variables. Being well-informed about these upcoming decisions is a brilliant move. Best of luck with your plans!
