What are some of the most dangerous college campuses?

Hey guys, I'm starting to narrow down my college list, but safety is a top priority for me and my folks. We've heard some campuses can be significantly more dangerous than others. With that in mind, what are some campuses known for having higher crime rates or general danger levels?

Before naming any specific campuses, it's crucial to note that crime rates can vary greatly over time, and each student's experience also largely depends on their personal behaviors and level of caution. At the same time, it's equally important to bear in mind that universities are required by federal law (the Clery Act) to publish annual safety reports.

On to your question, some universities have gained a reputation for having higher reported crime rates. These include the University of New Mexico, University of Nevada - Las Vegas, and Stanford University, which have relatively high numbers of reported crimes per student, as per FBI report data.

However, it's also worth noting that high crime rates don't necessarily translate to a 'dangerous' campus. In some cases, a higher number of reported incidents might be indicative of more rigorous reporting practices at that school, or perhaps a more engaged and aware community that's more likely to report incidents. It's also possible that a campus might be geographically located in a city with a higher crime rate generally.

A comprehensive approach to safety involves taking practical steps to protect yourself and understanding the resources and support available on and off campus. All universities have mechanisms in place to address personal security, like blue light emergency phone stations, campus security patrols, and shuttle services for late-night travel on or near campus. Look into what security measures are available to students.

Most importantly, I strongly encourage you to review the Clery Act reports for any colleges you're considering to get a more comprehensive and official understanding of safety on those campuses. Engage with current students and ask them about their experiences and perceptions of safety as well.
