Military assistance for college funding?

Hey, does anyone have info on how the military provides free money for college? How does this system work and what does one need to do to avail it?

There are a few primary ways in which the military provides financial assistance for college:

1. The Post-9/11 GI Bill: This is one of the most popular programs, providing up to 36 months of education benefits to eligible service members and veterans for programs such as undergraduate and graduate degrees, vocational/technical training, etc. Benefits are tiered based on the number of days on active duty, and the program will pay your direct tuition and fees if you're attending a public in-state institution.

2. Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) Scholarships: These are competitive, merit-based scholarships covering all or part of a student's tuition. They’re awarded to students who commit to serving in the military after college. Different branches of the military offer different types of ROTC scholarships.

3. Tuition Assistance (TA) Program: Active-duty personnel are eligible for up to $4,500 per fiscal year in tuition assistance. This money can be used for classes that are a part of a servicemember's approved education goal list.

4. Yellow Ribbon Program: A part of the Post-9/11 GI Bill, this program is for Veterans (specifically those receiving the maximum benefit rate) to attend costly private schools that would otherwise not be fully covered under the standard GI Bill.

5. Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP): This is available if you elected to make contributions from your military pay to participate in this education benefit program.

In order to avail any of these, one needs to meet the eligibility criteria as defined by each program, and follow the necessary application process. It'll also be wise to consult thoroughly with an education officer or counselor within the military who can guide you through choosing the right option and application process. They can help you make the best choices based on your personal goals and circumstances.
