Is it possible to convert my military education into college credits?

Hello folks! I've gained some significant education through my military experience. I am wondering if anyone knows if colleges accept these credits? In short, can my military education be transferred into college credits?

Absolutely! Many universities and colleges recognize that the training and skills gained through military experience are valuable and applicable to higher education, and offer the option for service members to convert their military training and experience into college credits.

It's best practice to first get an official evaluation of your Joint Services Transcript (JST), which documents your military coursework and work history in the form of traditional college credits. The American Council on Education (ACE) collaborates with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to translate military training and experiences into college credits through the JST.

The process often involves submitting your JST to the college or university you're interested in attending. Then, the school's registrar or relevant department will evaluate your JST to determine how many credits you are eligible to receive, and how they can be applied towards your intended degree program.

Do note that universities follow their own policies when granting credits. Some schools may grant more credits than others or place the credits in different areas (general education, elective categories, or major-specific credits). As such, it's important to talk to an admissions counselor or academic advisor to understand how the process works at your prospective schools.

It's also worth noting that some schools are part of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Consortium, which are more flexible in allowing credit transfers.

Just remember, each university has its own policy regarding credit transfer, so don't get discouraged if you don't see the results you initially expect. Keep exploring until you find a place that meets your needs effectively. Good luck!
