Avoiding Burnouts: Worried about the 50 most stressful colleges

This whole process is already a lot, and I don’t want to choose a college that's going to add to my stress levels. Does anyone know what makes the top 50 most stressful colleges stressful? Any advice for choosing a less stressful school?

When looking at the reasons some colleges are considered more stressful, it typically centers around academic rigor and the general culture of the institution. Schools with a high level of academic rigor often expect a lot from their students, both in terms of coursework and extracurricular commitments. These expectations can create a pressure-cooker environment.

The culture at these institutions often plays a part as well. Competitive atmospheres can foster a feeling of stress and anxiety, particularly when there's a sense of necessary accomplishment or achievement to keep pace with peers. Moreover, colleges located in busy urban environments can be inherently stressful due to factors like high cost of living and less green space.

As for choosing a less stressful school, one key would be finding a school whose culture revolves around collaboration rather than cut-throat competition. Schools that emphasize learning for the sake of learning rather than for grades tend to be less stress-inducing.

Research the academic and mental health resources provided by the schools you're interested in. Colleges that have strong support systems in place for students are typically better at helping students manage their stress levels.

Consider also the type of setting where you feel most comfortable. If you think you'll thrive in a tranquil, rural environment, then looking for schools in these areas might be a great idea.

Listening to current students or alumni can provide valuable insights into the school's environment. You can find these perspectives through online forums or perhaps by connecting with students through events held by the admissions office.

Keep in mind that no matter which college you choose, there are likely to be stressful moments. It's part and parcel of the college experience. However, feeling supported and being in an environment that aligns with your personal preferences can be instrumental in managing and mitigating these stresses.
