Does having a college degree affect your pay in the military?

Hey everyone, I'm thinking about possibly joining the military after graduation, but I'm curious on how a college degree would affect my pay. Anyone has info on this? Would it be more beneficial to join right after high school or should I consider getting a degree first?

Yes, having a college degree can impact your military career and pay grade. If you enlist after acquiring your degree, you could enter service as a commissioned officer, which means starting at a higher rank – usually as second lieutenant in the Army, Air Force, or Marine Corps, or ensign in the Navy or Coast Guard.

Officer ranks generally have higher pay compared to enlisted ranks. For example, as of 2024, a second lieutenant (O1) starts at a base pay of just above $3800 per month, while an enlisted service member starting at E1 could be half that amount. The gap in pay scale increases as you progress in rank and service years.

Beyond salary benefits, the positions and opportunities available to you become more diverse and specialized, such as intelligence, legal, and medical roles. However, being an officer also comes with extra responsibilities and leadership duties.

It's important to note that having a degree is not the only factor to consider in deciding when to join. The right time to enlist also depends on your personal circumstances and career goals. Joining straight out of high school allows you to gain experience, training, skills, and save money (perhaps for a degree in the future), while going to college first can offer different opportunities. You could even consider participating in the ROTC program during college, which would allow you to gain military experience while studying.

In summary, having a college degree can certainly provide you with a solid foundation and potentially lead to higher pay and advanced career opportunities in the military. However, there are also valuable opportunities available for those who decide to enlist right after high school. It essentially boils down to your personal career objectives and life plans.
