Are there different paths beyond the military and college?

Hey all, my senior year is coming up and I'm faced with the big 'what's next?' question. College seems like the default, the military is another option, but I'm sure there must be other paths. Any insights on this would be greatly appreciated.

Absolutely, there are many other options beyond just college and the military after high school!

One path that many consider is going straight into the workforce. Depending on what field you're interested in, there are plenty of jobs that don't require a college degree.

Another popular choice is attending a vocational or trade school. These schools focus on providing practical job-specific skills, and programs often take less time to complete than a traditional college. Careers such as electricians, plumbers, dental hygienists, and paralegals can all start from vocational or trade schools.

If you have any entrepreneurial aspirations, starting your own business or becoming self-employed might be a path to consider. Websites like Etsy, for example, have given crafty individuals a platform to turn their hobbies into businesses.

Additionally, taking a gap year is becoming increasingly popular. Some students use this time to travel, volunteer, intern, or work before deciding on their next step. It can be a great opportunity to learn more about yourself and gain experience in the real world before diving into further education or a career.

Finally, apprenticeships blend on-the-job training with classroom learning and can be a great avenue into fields such as construction, manufacturing, and healthcare. For example, the U.S. Department of Labor sponsors a registered apprenticeship program.

These are just a few examples, and the path that's best for you will depend on your personal goals and interests. Take some time to explore what's out there and don't be afraid to take the road less travelled!
