Military Science Major - What's it all about?

Hello everyone! I've come across the term 'Military Science' quite a few times while browsing college majors. I'm not totally sure what it entails, could someone shed some light on this? How does pursuing this in college affect my future career options?

Military Science is a field of study that delves into the theory, history, science and organizational strategy of military operations. It is usually pursued by students intending to enter the military after graduation, as the coursework often prepares them for leadership roles within the military. However, this is not a requirement - you don't have to commit to military service to study this subject.

Studying Military Science offers a unique combination of learning about leadership, tactics, strategy, resource management, ethics, and international relations and it can lead to plenty of career paths outside the military as well.

In a typical Military Science program, you might take courses in military leadership, history, tactics, administration, and command structure. Some programs incorporate hands-on training and physical conditioning. Many colleges offer Military Science as part of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program, where students can earn a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S Army upon graduation.

As for career paths, individuals who study Military Science have a variety of opportunities available to them post-graduation. They could pursue roles in the military as officers, or take up civilian roles in areas like defense consulting, homeland security, intelligence, or law enforcement. The leadership and discipline developed through this major can be valuable in many career contexts, just like any other major.

Don’t forget - it’s also common to pursue this major as a way to complement another field of study. For instance, a student interested in international relations might also major in Military Science to understand the role of military action in global politics. This can provide a unique selling point when applying for jobs or graduate programs.
