Recommendations for College Applications as a Military Veteran?

I'm going to be starting my applications soon and I was wondering if any of you could help me out. As a military veteran, what unique things should I consider or highlight in my application? Should my military experience be a significant factor in my application essay? How about recommendation letters, anyone have experiences they can share concerning this?

Your military experience is undoubtedly a significant asset when it comes to applying for college. It sets you apart from traditional applicants due to the unique experiences and skills you've gained during your time in the military, such as discipline, leadership, teamwork, adaptability, and resilience.

In terms of your essay, your military experience can provide a unique perspective and demonstrate how you've overcome challenges, exhibited leadership, or applied skills in critical situations. However, remember to connect your experience back to how it has prepared you for college and your future career. Show how you can bring the same determination and problem-solving skills to a college environment.

For recommendation letters, try to obtain one from a military superior who can attest to your character, work ethic, and adaptability. They can give valuable insights into your ability to handle pressure, work in teams, adhere to rules and regulations, and your growth over time.

In addition, consider reaching out to your Education Services Officer (ESO) for advice. They will be knowledgeable about the educational opportunities and resources available to you as a veteran. They can also help guide you through the application process.

Always mention your veteran status in your application. Not only does this provide context to your experiences, but some colleges also give preference to veterans in the admissions process. Moreover, some universities have offices or centers dedicated to veteran support, and reaching out to these can help you learn more about the resources available to you at each institution.

Lastly, remember to include any educational accomplishments while you were in service, like coursework or certifications, as they demonstrate your commitment to learning.

Good luck with your applications!
