Can military disability benefits help with college admissions?

I've heard of various benefits offered to those with military disabilities. I wanted to know if having a military disability can help me or give me any leverage when applying to college. Does anyone have any useful insight about this?

While your status as a military veteran with a disability may not directly benefit your application in the admissions process, it does offer you a unique perspective that you can bring to campus. Many colleges value diverse perspectives and experiences, which include the life stories of veterans with disabilities. Therefore, storytelling in your application materials, such as in your essays or personal statements, could help you stand out.

On the other hand, having a military disability can provide access to financial aid resources that can make going college more affordable. For instance, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers financial assistance through the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) Program. These funds are meant to help veterans, especially those with service-connected disabilities, cope with the financial aspects of higher education – such as tuition, housing, and books. Also, many universities and colleges have specific scholarships and funds set aside for veterans.

Finally, many colleges also have services and resources dedicated to veterans on their campuses, ranging from special counseling, academic advising, social opportunities with other veterans, and more.

Just remember, every applicant has a unique set of experiences and perspectives they bring to the table. Use your experiences as a veteran with a disability as a strength - showing how you've overcome adversity and used your experiences to grow and learn. Best of luck with your college journey!
