Looking for reliable cars for college

As a soon-to-be college student, I want to buy a car that would help me commute. With students' budget constraints, do you guys have any recommendations for the most reliable cars that would be perfect for college students? Something that doesn't guzzle gas and doesn't cost too much to maintain would be perfect.
