From Military to College - Online Courses?

I've been in the military for a while now and I'm planning a transition back into academia. How beneficial are online courses in helping me return to college? Any tips or advice would be much appreciated!

Taking online courses can indeed be a great stepping stone back into the academic world after serving in the military. They offer a flexible schedule which is particularly useful if you're managing other responsibilities. Plus, they allow you to gain up-to-date knowledge in your area of interest and help demonstrate your commitment to learning to prospective colleges.

For those with a specific degree path in mind, taking online prerequisite courses related to your intended major can be an excellent way to prepare. For example, if you're aiming for a business degree, taking online courses in finance or marketing could help refresh your knowledge and provide a solid foundation.

On a different note, these courses can also assist in developing essential academic skills like writing, research, or critical thinking, which might require some brushing up after a hiatus from studying.

Remember that the reputation and accreditation of the online course providers matter. Seek out courses from reputable institutions or educational platforms.

Also, keep an eye on application deadlines while planning your course timeline, as some online classes may have set start and end dates. Having your courses completed before applications can allow you to include them in your application.

Lastly, while online courses can provide a smoother transition, don't underestimate the value of your military experience itself. Many skills obtained in the military, such as leadership, strategic planning, and problem-solving, are highly valued by colleges and they can greatly enrich your overall application. Make sure to highlight these experiences and skills in your application too. Good luck!
