What Are the Most Commonly Dropped Majors in College?

I've heard that a lot of people end up changing their majors in college. I'm curious, what are the majors that are most commonly dropped? And if possible, could someone also explain why they think these majors are dropped so often? Thanks!

The challenge in pinpointing the most commonly dropped majors lies in the fact that colleges don't often publicize the drop rates for different majors. However, according to various studies and academic observations, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects generally experience higher drop rates. Majors like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, and various fields of Engineering are commonly found at the top of the list. The same goes for Pre-Med tracks, which are known for their rigor and intensity.

Regarding the reasons why these majors are often dropped, a few factors commonly come into play. High expectations can often clash with the reality of the difficulties faced in these rigorous programs, leading to academic stress. The steep learning curve, high workload, demanding labs and assignments, and tough grading norms often become overwhelming. Furthermore, many students who enter college with a declared major in these areas may do so without a solid understanding of what the field entails day-to-day, leading to dissatisfaction when the reality doesn't meet expectations.

Lastly, lack of sufficient academic preparation in high school is another major factor. Some students find themselves underprepared for the advanced coursework and technical skills required in these fields.

That being said, changing majors is a common part of the college experience and can often lead students to discover subjects they're truly passionate about. It's crucial for students to select a major that suits their career aspirations, aligns with their skills, and most importantly, keeps them engaged and interested.
