Do HBCU Marching Bands Hold Competitions?

I've heard that HBCU marching bands are absolutely phenomenal, and I play the trumpet myself. Do HBCUs have marching band competitions, and if so, how competitive are they to join? Would love to know more as I'm seriously considering participation in college!

Hey there! It's fantastic to hear about your interest in HBCU marching bands—they really are a sight to behold! Many HBCUs participate in band competitions and showcases. One famous event is the Honda Battle of the Bands, which is an invitational showcase featuring performances by marching bands from HBCUs. It's a big deal in the community and a celebration of musicianship and showmanship!

As far as joining goes, competition can vary widely from school to school. Band members typically go through auditions to earn their spots. The level of competitiveness can depend on the school's program prestige and the individual instrument’s popularity. For trumpets, since they are a staple in marching bands, you might find more competition. My advice? Keep practicing and definitely highlight your experience and passion when you audition. Also, consider reaching out to band directors at the HBCUs you’re interested in for more specific information about their audition process. They can give you the best advice on how to prepare. Good luck, and I hope to see you marching at halftime in the near future!
