What are the most difficult majors in college?

Hey! I'm in the process of picking a major for college, and I think I would like a challenge. Which majors would you say are the hardest, and what makes them so? Is it the amount of coursework, or the difficulty of the material, or something else altogether?

The level of difficulty in a college major can certainly vary based on individual strengths and interests, so what might be deemed as "difficult" may be subject to personal interpretation. That being said, there are a few majors that are often regarded as challenging due to the rigor of the coursework, amount of studying, and complexity of the subjects involved. Here are four categories often cited:

1. STEM Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math): These are often seen as challenging due to the amount of technical understanding, problem-solving skills as well as the heavy workload involved. Engineering disciplines such as Electrical, Chemical, and Mechanical engineering are particularly known for their demanding coursework and rigorous assessments.

2. Pre-Medical or Biological Sciences: Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, and Physics majors, especially those pursued with the aim of attending medical school, tend to be quite challenging. Not only is the material complex, but the competition can be intense, and the expectations for performance are high.

3. Humanities and Social Sciences: Humanities majors such as Philosophy, and Economics can be quite rigorous. Philosophy often involves challenging readings, abstract theories, and logic puzzles. On the other hand, Economics integrates complex theories, mathematics, and requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

4. Fine Arts and Architecture: While these may not be traditionally seen as "difficult" in the academic sense, the amount of time commitment, hands-on practice, and skill development can be quite intense and demanding.

In conclusion, the "hardest" major can depend on several factors such as an individual's personal interests, academic strengths, the grading curve, and the amount of time and dedication required. The key is to find a major you feel passionate about because the passion for the subject can help you manage through the demands that come with it.
