Value of Military Training Per College Credit Hour

Hello everyone, I want to join the military and I'm considering transitioning into a college environment afterward. I've heard I can maybe get credits for the training, but I'm curious, what is the approximate value of military training per college credit hour?

Hello! That's a great transition step and I'm glad to see you're considering it. Institutions often offer credit for military experience as they understand the value and depth of the skills and training you have acquired. The American Council on Education (ACE) does offer a resource known as the ACE Military Guide, which helps translate military training into college credits. This guide is widely recognized by many colleges and universities.

The actual value of military training per college credit hour, however, truly depends on the university you are planning on attending. There's no standard measure as each institution has its own policy for reviewing and accepting military training as college credits. Some colleges might give you more credits for a certain training than other colleges.

For example, if you took a twelve-week leadership course in the military, one college might equate it to a 3-credit leadership course, while another might give you 6 credits.

A good course of action would be to reach out to the admissions offices or veterans’ affairs offices at the colleges you’re interested in. They can provide you with more specific information on their policies regarding military training and college credits. Additionally, consider having your Joint Services Transcript (JST) or Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Transcript ready when discussing this. Your JST or CCAF is an academically accepted document approved by ACE to validate your military occupational experience and training along with the corresponding ACE college credit recommendations. Still, I'd recommend you continue with your research to find what options are best for you. Best of luck on your college journey!
