Hungry for Knowledge: States with the Most Colleges

This is a bit of an odd one, but I'm trying to understand more about the distribution of colleges in different states. Specifically, which states have the most colleges, whether on a per capita basis, per square mile, or just the total number of D1 colleges? I’m also especially curious about states with lots of HBCUs. Thanks!

In terms of sheer number, the states with the most colleges and universities are California, New York, and Texas. These are also some of the most populous states in the country, so that makes sense.

However, if you're looking at the density of colleges, or colleges per square mile, the top states are usually smaller and more densely populated, such as Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Massachusetts, in particular, is known for its concentration of higher education institutions, boasting prestigious schools like Harvard and MIT in the Boston area.

Regarding Division 1 schools, the states with the most D1 colleges are again California, Texas, and New York. This is likely due also to their large populations and also potentially due to the concentration of athletic talent in these areas.

Regarding Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), most of these schools are found in the Southeast. Specifically, Alabama and North Carolina each have 11 HBCUs, the most of any state.

Note that there is considerable variation in the number and types of colleges in each state, and the presence of colleges and universities does not necessarily correlate with educational outcomes or opportunities within the state as these institutions often serve both in-state and out-of-state students.
